Discernment
God is always at work in the life of a believer, we just don't always see it. I would like to say that God puts opportunities in our path every day. Those situations, circumstances, people, that we stumble upon in our daily walk are opportunities for us to be used by God. Maybe its to give someone an encouraging word, or to share the gospel, or provide a need, or pray, love on, or correct a situation. We don't always know what to do but we can be encouraged that God is faithful and he shows us through his Word how to act, what to act on, and the words that we need. Are we discerning? What does discernment mean?; Philippians 1:9-10 (ASV)
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;
10 so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ; 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
Hebrews 5:14 "But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil."
So to be discerning is to know what to do in a situation, to be knowledgeable, and to know what is good and what is evil.
John MacArthur wrote a great blog on discernment and he said that we are discerning about the things that interest us. For example if we enjoy surfing we know when to go out, when the waves are smooth, glassy, or choppy, and when to avoid going out. We can discern when to go for a wave if we are in the right spot or were too far away. Basically we learn and know whats going to be best for us. If we are financially savvy we know when to invest our money, when to take it out, and what to invest in. We are going to make the best possible choice. Well in the same way we are told to be discerning about how we live our lives. We need to know what to do when something comes our way and we won't know what to do unless we are immersed in the Word of God.
So Christian- be encouraged today, be aware of who God has put in your path and love them with the love of Christ!
