Choosing God's way
You know that feeling you get when you've made a decision that you're not quite sure about? The feeling of peace isn't there; its a feeling of unrest and unease. As Christians we are blessed with every spiritual blessing, we have Christ with us, we have knowledge, and His word to direct us, so what could possibly be the problem? The problem is that we are determined to do things our way because we don't always put our trust in doing things God's way. We think; wait, no, but,.... and look for our justification.
When Moses was leading the people though the desert they began to complain because there was no water. So he went to God and asked him what to do. God told him this;
The LORD said to Moses, “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” Numbers 20:7-8
So what did Moses do?
Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank... But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Isrealites, you will not bring this community into this land that I give them. Numbers 20:11-12
When God commands us to do something he is very specific for His will to be done. God was not pleased because Moses was not faithful to God and his word. Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to the rock as God commanded.
When we see our leaders falter- we tend to doubt and falter as well.
"because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel. For you shall see the land before you, but you shall not go there, into the land that I am giving to the people of Israel." Deuteronomy 32:48-52 ESV
So when we are disobedient- we suffer loss, others miss out, and God doesn't always get the glory. The Israelites were the same way- God told them to go into the land and take it, but they were fearful, unbelieving, and untrusting. So instead of claiming what God promised them, they forfeited the blessings. We have the scriptures to teach us the way he wants us to go. Many times the enemy will tempt us to doubt God's word- he will twist it around, and tempt us to do things our way. However, when we trust God and his word and do things according to scripture, we will have peace and assurance. This is part of the armor that God equips us with; the belt of truth, the shield of faith, and the sword- the word of God. We can't live successful Christian lives without these. So don't focus on the circumstances- put your trust in God and He will sustain you.
3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. (Deut. 8:3, ESV)
